Explore The Texas Coastal Bend
CUERO
Heritage, History and Hospitality
Cuero, a classic Texas town, always welcomes visitors to its
historic location in the Coastal Bend along highways 183S and 87S.
DeWitt County, also known as the Wildflower Capital of Texas, as designated
by the 1998 Texas Legislature, hosts visitors to view the over 1,000
different flora species in April. The DeWitt County Wildflower Association
celebrates with many activities that educate and inform visitors of the
wildflowers in the County. Each April color-coded route maps and a colorful
guide are available at the Wildflower headquarters located in the county
museum. Docents provide daily updates of the best routes to see and
photograph. Additionally, the month long exhibit features fresh wildflowers
displayed in unique bottles and jars and labeled with their three different
names: species, common, and family. As a birding bonus Cuero is site #228 on
the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail; maps are available at the Chamber of
Commerce
office. Visit

Cuero’s major festival is the Turkeyfest Celebration. Held the second full
weekend of October, it celebrates
Cuero’s designation as “Turkey Capital of the World ”, when many of the
farmers produced turkeys over
fifty years ago. Diverse entertainment includes a giant parade, arts and
crafts, food booths, carnival, zany turkey contests, street dances and fun
for the whole family. Most famous is the “Great Gobbler Gallop ”, the turkey
race known the world over, between Worthington, MN ’s Paycheck and Cuero’s
Ruby Begonia. The two heat race, one in each town, averages the time
determining the winner of the ‘Traveling Turkey Trophy of Tumultuous Triumph
’ as well as the title ‘World ’s Fastest Turkey’. Visit
