Sarita Texas
Kenedy Ranch Museum of South Texas
The Kenedy Ranch Museum of South Texas opened its doors on October 25, 2003. The museum is located at 200 E. La Parra Ave. in Sarita, Texas, county seat of Kenedy County. It is about 20 miles south of Kingsville off of highway 77. The museum is housed in the former Kenedy Pasture Company building which was built in 1927 and is a program of the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation of Corpus Christi.
The museum was designed by Steve Harding Design of Houston and tells the story of the Kenedy family and South Texas history in a very different aspect, through murals. The murals were drawn and painted by Daniel Lechón of Houston. Lechón is originally from Mexico City and as a young man worked and painted with the famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. There are over 400 figures in the murals with over 70 of them depicting real life persons. To accompany the murals, the other art work represented are seven sculptures done by artist Kim Crowley of Santa Fe, New Mexico depicting key figures of the Kenedy Ranch, a vaquero and his son, a clerk, priest, rancher and the only real likeness of a person, Sarita Kenedy East.
There is a nice piece of technology called an audio wand that is given to visitors at the start of their tour that guides them through the rooms narrating the history behind the murals.
In a separate building, the Carriage House and which is the museum’s media center, a short documentary on the lives of the Kenedeños, the vaqueros and their families of the Kenedy Ranch, is shown in a nice theater setting with some very comfortable rocking chairs to sit in.
The visitor can then spend some time walking around the beautifully landscaped grounds and see some other attractions that one would see on the ranch.
