George West Texas
Welcome to the serenity of the South Texas Brush Country, long renowned for its trophy game and outstanding native habitat, just waiting for your sporting pleasure. Visit for a day, a weekend hunt or make this your new home.
George West is located midway between Choke Canyon Reservoir and Lake Corpus Christi where hunting and fishing abound. The City of George West, the County Seat of Live Oak County, is a tribute to the generosity and farsightedness of its founder, George Washington West. After building a courthouse, school and a hotel, he sold thousands of acres of this rich land to farmers, ranchers and businessmen. Many of these original settlers’ families still live here today.
Begin your visit to George West with a stop at the historic Buck West House, which is home to our Chamber of Commerce office and information center. From here, venture out and visit the Grace Armantrout Museum which houses memorabilia from the past. Next stop, the Live Oak County Courthouse, home of Geronimo. Once a lead steer for Mr. George West, this longhorn is preserved in all his splendor and is displayed in a glass-fronted building on the courthouse lawn.

Just a short drive out of town you can visit Choke Canyon Reservoir for excellent viewing of native wildlife or a day of fishing. For those hunters out there, be assured we have some of the best hunting in South Texas. Whether you’re looking for dove, quail, deer or wild hog, you’re sure to find your perfect hunting grounds right here. And, while you’re deer hunting, be sure to register for the Brush Country Big
Buck Contest. With categories for everyone, young and old alike, you might just come out a winner!
Two major annual events are the Live Oak County Fair and Storyfest. The fair is held on the 4th weekend each March and provides a week full of activities. Beginning with a beauty pageant and culminating in a busy weekend with a rodeo, parade, livestock show, carnival and cabrito cook off. The fair also happens to coincide with the wildflower season. On your drive to the fairgrounds, be sure to take notice of the brightly blooming bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and other native flora.
George West has been proclaimed “The Storytelling Capitol of Texas” and is proud to host Storyfest, a festival dedicated to the art of storytelling. Annually held on the 1st Saturday in November, this family oriented event attracts thousands. Come and enjoy various forms of storytelling, cowboy poetry, musical entertainment, arts and crafts and delicious food. Located just five miles off Interstate 37 and with State Highways 59 and 281 running directly through town, there are many roads that may bring you to our city. It is our hope that when traveling through, you will take the time to stop, visit, and let us show you what a rancher many years ago thought was the perfect spot in the Coastal Bend.
