VICTORIA
The South Texas Crossroads
Victoria’s history dates back to 1685 when Rene Robert Cavalier,
Sieur De LaSalle, established Fort St. Louis as a French
settlement on the western bank of Garcitas Creek in Victoria
county. Victoria became the third chartered city in Texas in
1824. Impresario Don Martin De Leon had received the charter and
named the city for the first president of Mexico, Don Guadalupe
Victoria.

Nestled beside the meandering Guadalupe River, Victoria is a
meticulous blend of the past, the present and the future. Proud
old homes, some dating back to the pre-Civil War era, line the
streets in the city’s older sections. In downtown Victoria,
stately turn-of-the-century buildings have been rebuilt and now
house professional offices. Throughout the city, fine examples
of historic architecture form a striking contrast to the city’s
shopping malls, state-of-the-art medical facilities and
outstanding educational complexes.
Focus: Outdoors
Outdoor recreational opportunities exist in great number in
Victoria. Numerous parks are located within the city limits the
largest of which is Riverside Park consisting of 562 picturesque
acres along the Guadalupe River. Situated within the park are a
27-hole public golf course, an exercise trail, The Texas Zoo,
the duck pond and numerous picnic and playground facilities.
Another feature attraction of Riverside Park is the Rose Garden,
accredited by the All-American Rose Selections, a national
organization that reviews public rose gardens.
Water is King
Victoria is also a water wonderland. Name your water
sport—fishing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, or speed boating
several lakes in and around Victoria will cater to your
interests. Coleto Creek Reservoir and Saxet Lake are popular
“fishing holes” plus offer complete camping conveniences and
protected areas for skiing, sailing and swimming.
Annual events such as the Jaycee Livestock Show,
Victoria Bach Festival, Czech Heritage
Festival and Noche en Mejico all provide
color and a sense of tradition.
